Writers will have an opportunity to share new work every time the class meets.

Throughout this section, writers will also complete craft exercises intended to expand their skillsets and deepen their understanding of novel writing as a process. This section will focus on how novelists forged original pathways by which to approach their craft. The first section of the course will comprise pairings of critical essays and readings of experimental novels by writers like Percival Everett, William Gaddis, Toni Morrison, Joy Williams, Jon Keene, and others. The course will be split into three sections: “Experimental,” in this construction, is a loose term meant only to challenge writers to interrogate their preconceptions of language, form, and politics.

The goal of this course is to write and revise an experimental novel manuscript over 12 months.
